History 1960 - 1970
During the mid 1960s, the government threw open the remaining land in the district, largely light land that had previously been passed over, bringing a third wave of settlers. Unfortunately, the quota system, insufficient land and finance, and in some cases lack of expertise forced many to relinquish their new holdings.
A private power supply had been operational in the townsite for some years; in 1963 this was taken over by the SEC.
The Hyden community continued to work hard to obtain improvements and facilities to the town. In 1964, the Hyden Hotel was opened to provide a drinking place for locals, and also accommodation for visiting travellers, who were beginning to visit the now-famous
Wave Rock in increasing numbers. Several dedicated locals formed a Tourist Committee, whose efforts attracted the attention of the Tourist Development Authority, and led to the establishment of a caravan park, kiosk and caretakers residence. In the late 1960s, the roadhouse was built. In 1968, an ambulance station was established. In 1971, the Silver Chain Medical Centre was opened, providing a permanent location and living quarters for a full time nurse, consulting rooms for the weekly doctor’s visits and other visiting professionals, and the ambulance garage. In the same year, the Pre-School Group commenced on two afternoons per week in the sports pavilion. A permanent centre was built in 1974, and from 1977 onwards a qualified kindergarten teacher was employed for three days per week.
In September 1972, celebrations were held to mark the 50th anniversary of settlement, with many former residents returning for the weekend, which included the unveiling of a commemorative rose garden and pioneers plaque.
A swimming pool had been a long sought after addition to the town facilities, but it was not until 1973 that a plan was finalised. It was a huge job, requiring over $211 000, a water supply (the town supply not being considered sufficient), and hours of community and professional labour. School swimming classes were first held in November 1977, and the pool was officially opened in February the following year.
The Hotel syndicate funded the purchase of a Drive-In screen and equipment, transported to Hyden on farm trucks and low-loaders. In 1977, the Hotel was completely refurbished and extended to create a large motel complex, as the demand for accommodation had far outstripped the original facility.
In 1978,
Hyden’s community newspaper the Waveline News commenced publications too. It is still written and produced by volunteers today.
